Debra Canning – Counsellor/Supervisor

Reg MBACP, Integrative Counsellor, Couples Counsellor, Crisis worker, Trainer and Supervisor

I am a qualified Counsellor and Crisis Worker offering a confidential counselling service in the Istead Rise and Gravesend area of Kent. I have specialist training in individual, couples counselling, relationship issues, child counselling and infertility.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapists (BACP).  Because of my training I can offer counselling to individuals, couples, children and students facing a wide range of personal issues and challenges.

Counselling provides a regular time and space for clients to talk about their problems and stress and explore difficult feelings in a supportive, safe and non-judgemental environment which is confidential. As a counsellor I respect the client’s viewpoint whilst helping them deal with specific problems, cope with crises, anxiety and depression, improve their relationships and develop a less stressful way of living.  I place great value on the relationship between client/clients and counsellor as this, in my experience, proves to be one of the most important factors in a successful outcome.

I offer you a safe, confidential, empathic and non-judgemental environment with space and time to explore your issues, fears and difficulties.  Throughout the counselling process the focus will be on working through the issues with the aim of moving towards a more satisfying, fulfilling and contented life.

I feel that supervision is crucial for the professional care of the counsellor, and I see it as my responsibility as supervisor to create a safe, trusting and supporting environment where you, the practitioner, can feel open enough to bring your version of reality to the supervision space.

While my overall approach is of an integrative model, I do also work existentially and believe this enables me to work with counsellors on the basis of their own theoretical approach.

I supervise professionals who are operating throughout all levels of experience and seniority as:

  • Counsellors and psychotherapists in private practice and/or within the NHS, hospices, young people’s services, school and university counselling services.
  • Couple therapists.
  • Student counsellors on training courses and in clinical placements.
  • Course leaders and counselling services managers.
  • Health care professionals.
